
Last weekend I was in Holland's largest city, Amsterdam. It is only a 40 minute flight from London.
Amsterdam is a beautiful city of canals, bicycles, and boats. The tall houses are very narrow, because when they were built you had to pay taxes on the width of your house. So people made their homes narrow and tall to save tax money.

Holland is famous for its tulips ...

Most of the tall, narrow buildings have hooks near the top of the roof. When people move in or out of houses, they have to move big things like furniture through the windows, because the staircases are so narrow. They attach a rope to the hook to move things up and down.
